Government Liaison
By Don Martin

Another month has gone by and there is a lot going on.

Probably the best news we’ve got as sportsmen this past month is the signing into law SB-1200.  This law allows a louder sportsman input on the selection of those who serve on the Arizona Game & Fish Commission. A five member panel will be chosen to review the applications of those who wish to serve as a Commissioner; that committee will have three sportsmen, one rancher and one person from a non-consumptive group on that panel.

All of Mohave County’s legislators, Rep. Doris Goodale, Rep. Nancy McLain and Senator Ron Gould, voted to support this legislation.

The bad news for local sportsmen is that it is still not known at this time if the State Parks’ people will close down Alamo Lake State Park in June.

Due to a shortage of about $47,000, the State Parks reports they will close the park at Alamo Lake which is on the county’s southern border. I am working with Rep. Doris Goodale and others on this issue.

Here is another issue of importance to local sportsmen.  The folks at the Lake  Mead    National   Recreational
Area are taking public input on their request to raise fees starting in 2011.

The LMNRA people say they need to raise a lot of money to pay for launch ramps and the repair and maintenance of infrastructure on the massive recreation area.  The water level in the lake is still going down and expected to drop 16 vertical feet by October.

If you are concerned about this proposal, which will raise annual vehicle/watercraft passes from the current $20 to $30 and will do away with the reduced fees for second vehicle/watercraft passes, you need to let the LMNRA people know.

These fee increases will be especially tough on senior citizens who are on fixed incomes. Plus, they are planning on keeping just 80 percent of the funds at Lake Mead, and use the other 20 percent to fund other parks that don’t charge any fees.

You can send in your comments by mail to LMNRA, Attention: Proposed Fee Increases, 601 Nevada Way, Boulder City, NV 89005 or by going on line at http:/parkplanning.nps.gov
